Phillip P. Ashley is a highly experienced insurance coverage attorney and has a wide range of experiences in the insurance field, including litigating to trial insurance defense cases, as well as managing teams of attorneys and claims professionals involving complex healthcare claims. After law school, Phil practiced law with the Kansas City firm of Williamson & Cubbison, where he was a partner, in the areas of medical malpractice defense and commercial litigation. He tried cases in Kansas, State and Federal courts, and prosecuted many appeals in Kansas and the 10th Circuit. In 1999, Phil joined GE’s Employers Reinsurance Corp. (ERC) as a member of the Healthcare Professional Liability Claims Team, specializing in catastrophic injury medical malpractice cases. In 2002, he was appointed Leader of GE ERC’s Primary Hospital Claims Team where he managed a team of attorneys and claims professionals and oversaw a large book of hospital professional liability claims nationwide. In 2005, Phil joined Wagstaff & Cartmell Of Counsel. In his role as claims consultant for Sompo International, f/k/a Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd., he has evaluated, managed and negotiated high exposure healthcare and medical malpractice litigation on its behalf. In addition, he has assisted the underwriting team with client development and retention, as well as policy drafting, coverage issues and audits. Phil joined Bates Carey in 2020 and continues his work for Sompo International. Phil has written articles on medical malpractice trends and presented at many client and industry events.
