Agelo Reppas Named to Chicago Lawyer’s 4th Annual Women in Law List
BatesCarey is proud to announce that Chicago Lawyer has named Agelo Reppas to its 4th annual Top Women in Law list.
With over two decades of exclusive dedication to appellate practice, Agelo has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape. Her extensive experience spans appearances in ten federal courts of appeal and seven state supreme courts. Recognized for her innovative advocacy, Agelo adeptly translates complex legal concepts into compelling arguments, exemplified by her success in overturning a significant judgment that resulted in the recovery of over $13,000,000 for her client.
Agelo has played a pivotal role in several key insurance decisions. Last year, she secured a vital victory before the New York Appellate Division, Third Department, which unanimously upheld a judgment finding that two AIG insurers owe no coverage in connection with PFAS environmental contamination claims. The decision was the first published decision finding that PFAS chemicals qualify as irritants, contaminants or pollutants within the meaning of a pollution exclusion.
She was also essential in helping the firm set Illinois precedent for the insurance industry with the Illinois Supreme Court’s ruling that insurance coverage for malicious prosecution claims is triggered only at the time of the wrongful charging, and not in subsequent years of retrials or exoneration. In this case, the Illinois Supreme Court became one of the first state high courts to rule that the term “offense” in the context of an occurrence-based policy indicates that coverage is triggered during the period in which the offensive conduct was committed.
Agelo's commitment extends beyond her legal practice, as evidenced by her active involvement in the Appellate Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute and the Hellenic Bar Association. She was instrumental in establishing BatesCarey's annual networking event, "Tea Talk: Women Empowering Women," a testament to her dedication to fostering collaboration and advancement of women in her profession.
Agelo's contributions to the legal community extend to mentoring and empowering young attorneys, a quality noted by her colleagues. They admire Agelo not only for her legal prowess but also for her kindness and poise in even the most challenging situations. Her ability to ease tensions and maintain control through a deep understanding of legal issues underscores her leadership in the legal community.
Chicago Lawyer’s Top Women in Law list celebrates women attorneys for their mentorship, leadership and success in the legal field, qualities exemplified by Agelo.
