BatesCarey Bolsters Appellate Practice With Former Sedgwick Partner

11.27.2017

National insurance coverage law firm BatesCarey announced today Agelo L. Reppas has joined as a partner to bolster the firm’s trial monitoring and complex appellate practices.

For nearly two decades, Reppas has represented clients in appellate and post-trial litigation in jurisdictions across the country, most recently at the Chicago office of Sedgwick LLP. Her strong track record includes successful appeals in matters relating to construction; employment; fidelity, surety and crime; insurance coverage; premises liability; professional services liability; and transportation litigation.

“Agelo’s stellar reputation for appellate work – both through crafting trial strategy and in successfully carrying that through the appellate process – makes her a tremendous asset for our team,” said Robert J. Bates, Jr., founding partner of BatesCarey. “Our insurance and reinsurance clients often are faced with volatile unanticipated appellate concerns that arise either on the doorstep of trial, or often after a judgment, so having Agelo in our corner gives our clients a unique advantage in adeptly maneuvering through these litigation mine fields.”

Reppas regularly serves as embedded appellate counsel on high-exposure cases, and is brought in by insurers, often on a moment’s notice, to collaborate with defense counsel to navigate the evidentiary or interlocutory issues hanging over trial preparation or the post-trial process.

“We saw a repeated need from our insurance clients to have the appellate expertise at the trial level to help leverage settlements, protect coverage issues, or protect the insured’s appellate interests,” said Adam H. Fleischer, BatesCarey partner. “In Agelo, we’ve added the person with the legal acumen, analytical skills and ingenuity that can mean the difference between winning or losing for our insurance clients and their own insureds.”

Reppas is licensed in Illinois, New York and nine of the 11 U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals. She received a J.D. from Washington University School of Law in 2000 and both a B.A. and a B.S from University of Iowa in 1995.

For more than 15 years, BatesCarey LLP has dedicated its practice to protecting the interests of insurers and reinsurers while shaping the trends of insurance law throughout the United States and abroad.
