BatesCarey Creates Nation’s First Opioid Coverage Task Force
Public health officials have described the national prescription opioid epidemic as the worst drug crisis in American history. Reminiscent of the tobacco lawsuits of the 1990s, attorneys general and municipal governments have filed more than 20 lawsuits to date against pharmaceutical companies and distributors to recover the costs generated by the epidemic, including healthcare subsidies, lost productivity, and “criminal justice” expenses. Of course, multiple insurance coverage suits have followed. BatesCarey has established the first Opioid Coverage Task Force in the country, devoted to monitoring and investigating prescription opioid lawsuits, keeping its clients regularly informed of developments and emerging risks, and analyzing the unique coverage issues presented by opioid claims.
